If you can’t afford a private college (or simply have no interest in attending one), the public sector offers plenty of good choices. If you are a state resident, the price can be attractive, too.

U.S. News & World Report is out with its annual ranking of America’s Best Colleges. Here’s their list of the Top 10 Public Schools:

  1. University of California, Berkeley (Berkeley, Calif.)
  2. University of Virginia (Charlottesville, Va.)
  3. University of California, Los Angeles (Los Angeles, Calif.)
  4. University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, Mich.)
  5. University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill, N.C.)
  6. College of William and Mary (Williamsburg, Va.)
  7. Georgia Institute of Technology (Atlanta, Ga.)
  8. University of Wisconsin (Madison, Wisc.)
  9. University of California, San Diego (La Jolla, Calif.)
10. University of Illinois (Champaign, Ill.)
