When the stock market hits the skids, investors can’t help but wonder who’s minding the store.

CEO compensation is under fire. Boards of Directors feel the heat. Product managers are pressed to deliver the kinds of goods that can save the day.

24/7 Wall St. surveyed the scene recently and produced its assessment of the “Ten Worst Managed Companies in America.” Ratings were based on one and five-year stock performance, the company’s current and five-year standing within its industry, negative management decision making, a change in relative market strength versus competitors, and whether mistakes could have been avoided.

Here are the Top 5:

1. Sun Microsystems (JAVA)

2. Sears Holdings (SHLD)

3. Boston Scientific (BSX)

4. Starbucks (SBUX).

5. Sprint (S).
