American Beauty (1999). Annette Bening should have won the Oscar for underplaying a role that was difficult to underplay. She’s the wildly upwardly mobile spouse of defiantly downwardly mobile Kevin Spacey. Their verbal duels have panache, wit and even some perverse form of affection. But that doesn’t spell L-O-V-E.
