Seven Trends in High School Style

Melissa Segrest

High school style for girls centers around what your friends are wearing. Or, more specifically, whatever they’re not wearing.  The standard T/tight tank/cami, hoodie, jeans and sneakers are fine, but here are some ideas for making a new style statement for fall, from Shopperati:

1) New Kinds of Jeans - There are lots of new styles, washes and cuts in jeans this fall: skinny, waisted, wide-legged, brightly colored, distressed/ripped or cuffed. Break out of the old hip-hugging flare look.

2) Layered, Tight, Loose - and the Clash - We’ll call it Bohemian chic and it looks a little zany: Dresses atop striped skirts, clashing patterned tights, a ruffled blouser over a striped turtleneck. Think of mismatching everything and you’ve pretty much got it down.

3) Headbands and Scarves - Carrying on with that Bohemian look, there are beaded headbands sometimes worn low on the forehead, and multi-colored fringed scarves are everywhere. Keep adding on multicolored bangles for the arm, too.

4) Flat On the Floor or Boots to the Knee - Certainly the comfortable sneaker isn’t going anywhere but there are a lot of colorful, simple flats to be had in a mix of styles. Boot styles are generally simple but are either short and slouchy or knee-high or higher (and some with fringe).

5) The Hot Hue - Call it purple or plum, burgundy or lavender, it’s showing up in lots of ways, from Ts to sweaters, hoodies to sneakers.

6) Preppy is Back - There are polos and argyle vests aplenty all over the stores and Web, even in retailers you don’t consider preppy. Don’t take the style too seriously, though (see Bohemian chic above). Mix it with some offbeat elements.

7) The Everything Bag - They’re big and baggy, sometimes subtle or sometimes wild, but made to carry the maximum amount of stuff. Finding just the right one is like going on an Easter egg hunt - it’s all in the thrill of the hunt.
