Digital photography can be a wonderful thing. High Definition TV is a revelation. And, who doesn’t like a cool, new cell phone that can launch an invasion of Poland?

Technology can be our friend, and quite often, it is. Now and then, however, even the biggest of brains can misfire.

Fortune looked around and tried to identify some recent entries from the “it seemed like a good idea at the time” department.

Here’s part of the list:

High-tech Toilets: Three produced by manufacturer Toto caught fire.

Electronic Voting Machines: Susceptible to viruses.

Cartoon Network: Caused a bomb scare in Boston by putting up electronic lightboards to promote a new show.

Google: Ran an ad offering to help PC users get their computers infected.

Research in Motion: BlackBerry servers went down for most of a day.
