The purpose of a bridge is to link one place with another. (Unless, of course, you’re building one in Alaska…)

That doesn’t mean you can’t make that connection with a bit of style. Many of the world’s most famous bridges are known as much for their beauty as for their functionality.

The ever-vigilant folks at Forbes Traveler have put together a list of the World’s Greatest Bridges. Some are obvious, others…not so much.

14. Ponte Dom Luis, Porto, Portugal

13. Bixby Bridge, Big Sur, California

12. Zakim Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge, Boston, Massachusetts

11. Kintai Bridge, Japan
