Eddie Murphy box office bombs

Has Eddie Murphy become box office poison? His new family comedy, Imagine That, grossed just $5.7 million on its opening weekend, making it only the sixth-best draw for that period.

That makes it two years in a row that Murphy’s summer release qualified for “bomb” status. Meet Dave, his 2008 offering, took in a paltry $5,251,918 during its opening weekend after brutal reviews. It was Murphy’s worst debut since the disastrous The Adventures of Pluto Nash, which brought in a meager $2,182,900 when it came out in August, 2002.

Counting only films in which he was the star — excluding, for instance, his work in the Shrek series and anything that opened in limited release (Dreamgirls) — here are his other opening weekend totals since 2000:

Norbit (2/9/07): $34,195,434

The Haunted Mansion (11/26/03): $24,278,410

Daddy Day Care (5/9/03): $27,623,580

I Spy (11/1/02): $12,752,803

Showtime (3/15/02): $15,011,430

Dr. Doolittle 2 (6/22/01): $25,037,039

The Nutty Professor 2: The Klumps (7/28/00): $42,518,830
