Baseball’s winningest managers
April 6, 2009
While many of baseball’s all-time records would seem to be beyond the reach of today’s players and managers, that isn’t to say the current crop isn’t making a game assault on the books.
Of Major League Baseball’s Top 10 winningest managers of all time at the start of the 2009 season, three were still manning dugouts and trying to outwit the guy across the way. None would seem to have a shot at the No. 1 spot overall, but Tony LaRussa (Cardinals), Bobby Cox (Braves) and Joe Torre (Dodgers) clearly have established themselves among the best ever to make out a lineup card.
Curious to see what kind of company they are keeping?
Here’s the list:
1. Connie Mack – 3,731
2. John McGraw — 2,763
3. Tony LaRussa — 2,461*
4. Bobby Cox — 2,327*
5. Sparky Anderson — 2,194
6. Bucky Harris — 2,157
7. Joe Torre — 2,151*
8. Joe McCarthy – 2,125
9. Walter Alston — 2,040
10. Leo Durocher — 2,008
* Still active.
