KBTV’s Main Anchor, Jim Walker, gives you 5 tips to build a better body!
August 12, 2008
1. Getting started: If you have never exercised or it has been years since you’ve trained, see a doctor first and start slowly. Exercise can be as simple as a walk around the block. The point is to get your body moving for at least 30 minutes, even if that is a 30 minute walk.
2. Lift some weight: Man or woman, young or old, lifting weights will improve your health and your body’s appearance. If you are overweight and shaped like an apple, once you lose weight, you will just be a smaller apple. To change your body’s shape, you have to change its structure by working the muscles. One added benefit is that building more muscle means your body burns more calories.
3. Don’t curse the scale: If you are walking and/or running daily, plus lifting weights, don’t be surprised if your “scale weight” doesn’t change dramatically. You are likely losing weight but also gaining muscle. Since muscle weighs more than fat, you may be see a difference on the scale, so judge your progress by looking in the mirror and by how your clothes fit.
4. It not how much you lift: This sounds like something a 95 pound weakling would say, but bodybuilders know it’s true. The difference between bodybuilding and weightlifting is that bodybuilding is the use of weight/resistance to sculpt the body. Weightlifting is simply the challenge of seeing how many pounds you can lift. If you are trying to change your body, find a resistance level that is just above your comfort zone, then strive to accomplish that. Also make sure you’re using proper form. If not, you may not be working be the correct muscle, or worse, could injure yourself.
5. Nutrition is paramount: You have got to get your diet in order. No amount of exercise will overcome a poor diet. What you eat is 65% of the way you look. You should be conscious about everything you eat everyday. Not to say you shouldn’t ever have the bad stuff, but most of our daily fuel needs to be the good stuff. There are hundreds of books on the market, by my personal favorite is “Body for Life,” by Bill Phillips. It offers a practical, straight-forward approach to building a great body through healthy eating and exercise.
In addition to being the main anchor at KBTV 4, Jim Walker is also an amateur bodybuilder and is certified as a personal trainer by the Cooper Aerobics Center in Dallas. He most frequently trains at World Gym in Beaumont.
