8. Phoenix

Not a traditional stronghold, but the Phoenix-Glendale area has earned a spot among the sporting elite in recent years. The Arizona Diamondbacks won a World Series in 2001, and the longtime doormat Cardinals came within an eyelash of a Super Bowl title this season. The Cardinals’ new University of Phoenix Stadium is one of the NFL’s finest. The NBA Suns and the NHL’s cash-strapped Coyotes round out the pro scene, although hockey’s tenure may be short-lived. The area also plays host to the Cactus League as a large number of MLB teams take advantage of the good weather to hold spring training there. For the college-minded, Arizona State in nearby Tempe provides a viable alternative, and the annual Fiesta Bowl is an integral part of the Bowl Championships Series.
