Best places to grow old

Bill Sullivan
June 3, 2009

For baby boomers dreaming of retirement to warm, sunny spots like Florida or Arizona, the last year or so has offered a sobering new reality.

In the economic meltdown, retirement funds dwindled, if they didn’t disappear entirely. Plans for calling it quits at 65 gave way to budgets that called for working to age 70 or more.

Given this new level of expectation, Forbes took a look at some less-celebrated places to grow old. There’s still quite a bit to be said for golf in Arizona or fishing in the Florida keys, but all things considered, there are some other good options, too.

Here’s the list:

Lancaster County, Pa.

Westchester County, N.Y.

Ocean County, N.J.

Montgomery County, Md.

Brevard County, Fla.

Honolulu County, Haw.

Palm Beach County, Fla.

Pima County, Ariz.

Nassau County, N.Y.

Montgomery County, Pa.

What makes these places such good choices for those entering the golden years? Click on over to Forbes to read more about them.
