Two-term U.S. presidents

Bill Sullivan
April 27, 2009

Of the 43 men elected President of the United States, only 14 were subsequently re-elected and served two full terms. (One, Franklin D. Roosevelt, actually was elected four times but died shortly into his final term; Grover Cleveland served two non-consecutive terms.)

Who managed to keep the country on his side well enough to earn eight (or more) years in the Oval Office?

Here’s the list:

1. George Washington: 1789-1797

2. Thomas Jefferson: 1801-1809

3. James Madison: 1809-1817

4. James Monroe: 1817-1825

5. Andrew Jackson: 1829-37

6. Ulysses S. Grant: 1869-1877

7. Grover Cleveland: 1885-1889, 1893-1897

8. Theodore Roosevelt: 1901-1909

9. Woodrow Wilson: 1913-1921

10. Franklin D. Roosevelt: 1933-1945

11. Dwight D. Eisenhower: 1953-1961

12. Ronald Reagan: 1981-89

13. William J. Clinton: 1993-2001

14. George W. Bush: 2001-2009
