Top Yankee Stadium Moments

Yankee Stadium closed its doors on Sunday, Sept. 21, as the team moves across the street to open a new park to start the 2009 season.

While the replacement venue also will be known as Yankee Stadium, it will not be The House That Ruth Built. Those images, however, will remain vivid in the memories of generations of fans.

What are some of the most memorable moments at the big ballpark in the Bronx?

Here’s a sampling from one list compiled by Sports Illustrated:

Babe Ruth’s 60 home runs in 1927.

Joe Louis knocks out Max Schmeling, 1938.

Lou Gehrig’s farewell speech, 1939.

Joe DiMaggio’s 56-game hitting streak in 1941.

Don Larsen’s World Series perfect game, 1956.

First overtime NFL championship game (1958).

Chuck Bednarik lays out Frank Gifford (1960).

Roger Maris’ 61 home runs in 1961.

Reggie Jackson’s three home run game in the 1977 World Series.

George Brett and the Pine Tar Incident, 1983.
