Ever wondered how Gone with the Wind or The Ten Commandments might stack up at the box office compared to similar blockbusters of more recent vintage?

Box Office Mojo has gone to considerable lengths in an attempt to sort it all out.

It’s a complicated formula, to say the least. Even so, it’s an interesting look at how popular older classics really were in their day, matched against tastes in the current market.

The top 10, with year of original release and adjusted gross:

1. Gone with the Wind (1939) — $1,377,944,300

2. Star Wars (1977) — $1,214,775,600

3. The Sound of Music (1965) — $971,272,900

4. E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (1982) — $967,446,600

5. The Ten Commandments (1956) — $893,420,000
