Two-time Academy Award winner Denzel Washington is back in theaters this week with the debut of The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, a remake of the 1974 film that starred Walter Matthau, Robert Shaw and Martin Balsam. In the new version, Washington is a subway dispatcher trying to match wits with a mastermind (John Travolta) who is holding subway passengers hostage for a ransom.

In a long and distinguished career, Washington has won two Oscars — as Best Actor for Training Day and Best Supporting Actor for Glory. He has been nominated on three other occasions, for Best Actor (The Hurricane and Malcolm X) and Best Supporting Actor (Cry Freedom).
