Things we’re still buying

To read the paper or watch TV, you’d get the impression that no one is spending any money in this ground-to-a-halt U.S. economy.

Banks are failing. Automakers want to be bailed out. Large electronics chains are liquidating assets and closing their doors.

Alas, not everyone seems to be feeling the pain (or acknowledging it, at least). Some items apparently are so irresistible that even cash-strapped consumers are willing to pony up.

What’s still jumping off the retail shelves? Forbes looked into just that and came up with this list:

Smart Phones

Videogames and Consoles

Gym Memberships

Personal Care

Toy Building Sets

Car Maintenance

Dress Casual Shoes

Restaurants

Movie Tickets

Netbooks
