As elusive as he may be to fans and media, Bob Dylan clearly likes company — at least when it comes to being on the road.

This summer, he’s doing another tour of minor league ballparks, with friends Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp along for the ride. Sharing the bill is nothing unusual for Dylan, however, as he has a long history of giving his fans a little something extra for their money.

Here’s a list of just some of the artists who have toured with him over the years:

The Band (1974)

The Rolling Thunder Revue (Joan Baez, Roger MGuinn) (1975)

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (1986)

The Grateful Dead (1987)

Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell (1998)

Paul Simon (1999)

Willie Nelson (2004)

Merle Haggard (2006)

Elvis Costello (2007)

Originally, the town was supposed to host the event, but backed out when rumors spread predicting a much larger than expected turnout. As a result, the show moved to an alfalfa field in Bethel, about 40 miles away, and the rest is…well, history.

In all, 32 acts appeared over the course of the four day event, held August 15-18, 1969. Here’s the lineup, in alphabetical order:

Joan Baez

One man's opinion leaves plenty of room for debate

fMSNBC contributor Eric Olsen bravely steps where many have gone before: he dared to publish his list of the top 10 rock bands ever. As he puts it, “One can either cower in anticipation of the monsoon of disagreement sure to come and load the package with every manner of weaselly equivocation, or one can swagger ahead blissfully secure in the universal righteousness of one’s judgment. Being American, I choose the latter.”

Here’s the method behind Olsen’s list: The winners had to be an actual band; they had to be “within the greater circle of ‘rock’ music and generate most or all of their own material.” Olsen also considered cultural influences, staying power, and our favorite: the “It’s a Wonderful Life” factor: “What damage would be done if the band were to be removed from rock history? — the greater the damage, the greater the band.”

Here’s Olsen’s top 10 bands of all time:
