f the 2009 preseason college football polls are to be believed, there’s not much point in playing the season. When the Associated Press anointed Florida as No. 1 at the start, it made for pretty much a clean sweep for the Gators.

The defending national champions received 58 of 60 first place votes. No. 2 Texas got the others.

Here’s how they’ll break from the gate:

Most College World Series titles

Southern California tops the all-time list of College World Series champions, and the Trojans will be staying No. 1 for a while, at least.

USC has claimed 12 championships in its history. That’s twice the number posted by Texas and LSU, tied for No. 2 on the list with six.

Here’s a list of the teams with more than one CWS title:

Thanksgiving Weekend is a bittersweet affair for a big-time college football fan.

On one hand, it’s the last full weekend of the regular season, and the end of the line for teams not playing for conference championships or qualifying for bowl bids. On the other, it’s a three-day feast featuring some of the college game’s most intense rivalries.

This year, Texas and Texas A&M have returned their game to the traditional Thanksgiving Day, kicking off the party in style. Here’s a list of some of the showdowns that help make the weekend special:

The Texas-Oklahoma game has produced its share of heroes over the years, some of them more unlikely than others. Coming up big against a hated rival can create a reputation that lasts a lifetime.

Here’s a list of some of the top OU performances against Texas. Since beating the hated Longhorns is a rather large deal on the north side of the Red River, Sooner fans probably remember these names fondly.

College sports fans can easily keep up with who’s No. 1 (or close, at least) in their favorite sport. But which NCAA programs do the best job overall in terms of keeping the customers satisfied?

Get your Horns up, Texas. Your Longhorns are No. 1.

Of course, all of this depends on how you base the rankings. In this case, Rivals.com used results in football, men’s basketball and baseball.

The survey began with just football and baseball. Through those two seasons, Oklahoma ranked No. 1 overall. But Texas’ four baseball national championships (1975, ‘83, 2002 and ‘05) skewed the numbers the Longhorns’ way after a third sport was added to the mix.

Data was analyzed back to the 1974-75 school year, which was the first in which more than one team from a conference could receive a bid to the NCAA basketball tournament. Texas also ranked No. 1 when schools were rated in the BCS era, which dates back to 1998.

Top universities by merchandise sales

According to Collegiate Licensing Company, the University of Texas at Austin defended its title in leading all U.S. colleges in athletics merchandise sales for the 2007-08 school year. After raking in a record of more than $8.3 million during the 2005-06 season, UT stayed on top for a third straight year, this time coming in with sales of about $8.2 million.

Who else did the best job of hawking souvenir caps, T-shirts and pennants?
