To compile the InfoTech100, BusinessWeek began with financial data from Standard & Poor’s Compustat, also a division of The McGraw-Hill Companies, that has computerized information on over 30,500 publicly traded corporations. BusinessWeek trimmed this universe to information-technology companies. To qualify, companies had to have revenues of at least $500 million. This collection of about 800 companies was divided into eight industry categories, such as software and semiconductors. Companies whose stock price has dropped more than 50%, whose sales shrank 5% or more, or where other developments raised questions about future performance were eliminated from contention. BusinessWeek also dropped some phone companies whose monopoly or near-monopoly power may give them an advantage over competitors. The remaining group of companies was ranked on four criteria: return on equity, shareholder return and revenue growth (which were given equal weight), and total revenues (which were weighted). The four rankings for each company were added together, and those with the lowest combined score topped the list. The top 100 were then reranked as a group.

Unfortunately, many of those high-tech devices have a common problem: They’re prone to break easily, and no one wants to fix them. Ergo, you can find yourself on the perpetual Two Year Service Agreement from Hell with a pricey phone that seems designed to last, oh, 18 months or so.

Some folks are beginning to figure this out. Not long ago, Forbes decided to produce a list of “Cellphones Your Wallet Will Love.” They may not be particularly sexy, but you just might be able to make a call…which is really the point, right?

Many of these first were made available in developing nations, where bells and whistles weren’t given quite so high a priority. Still, the list gives you an idea of what you should actually be able to get for a reasonable price.

Here goes:

– Nokia 1200: $55
