In 2008, the Mets shortstop led the National League in triples (19) and was second in stolen bases (56). He also was the only NL player to top 200 hits, finishing with 204.

Still, there was no ignoring a late season slide dropped his batting average under .300 (.297) as New York faded and was eliminated from playoff contention on the season’s final day.

Can Reyes and the Mets get it together in 2009? Having the No. 1 and 2 hit men in the league might be a good place to start.

Here’s the final list:

1. Jose Reyes, New York: 204

2. David Wright, New York: 189

3. Albert Pujols, St. Louis: 187

4. Cristian Guzman, Washington: 183

5. Randy Winn, San Francisco: 183

6. Derrek Lee, Chicago: 181

7. Miguel Tejada, Houston: 179

T8. Stephen Drew, Arizona: 178

T8. Ryan Theriot, Chicago: 178

Lately, however, he finds himself in some less distinguished company.

Young is in his eighth big league season, all with the Rangers. The previous seven have produced just one winning record and no playoff appearances. That dubious run left Young ninth on the season-opening list of 10 players who have appeared in more than 1,000 regular season games, were active at the end of 2007, but have yet to qualify for the postseason.

Who are the others?

Interestingly enough, Young has company in the Texas clubhouse. Teammate Frank Catalanotto holds down the No. 8 spot, having played 1,075 major league games without lacing up the spikes for a playoff.

The Futile 10, with current or most recent team:

Damion Easley, New York Mets – 1,593

Jose Vidro, Seattle – 1,333

Tony Batista, Washington – 1,309

Randy Winn, San Francisco – 1,297

Mike Sweeney, Oakland – 1,282

Geoff Jenkins, Philadelphia – 1,234

Mike Lieberthal, Los Angeles Dodgers – 1,212

Frank Catalanotto, Texas– 1,075

Michael Young, Texas – 1,061

Aubrey Huff, Baltimore – 1,018
