Hardest Drinking Cities

If you really enjoy bellying up to the bar and drinking your fill, the Mile High City is the place to be. According to a survey conducted by Men’sHealth, Denver, Colo., tops the list of America’s “10 most dangerously drunk cities.”

MensHealth used five measuring points to assess each locale, gathering information from the Centers for Disease Control, the FBI, and Mothers Against Drunk Drivers. Those factors included 1) deaths related to liver disease, 2) number of binge drinkers, 3) DUI arrest rates, 4) alcohol-related fatal wrecks, and 5) MADD reports.

Most College World Series Champions

Each June, the best of the best in college baseball descend on Omaha, Neb., for the city’s signature event: The College World Series, where the NCAA’s Division I national champion is crowned.

While the CWS debuted in Kalamazoo, Mich., in 1947, it moved to Omaha in 1950 and has been there ever since. The playoff series drew a total of 17,805 fans that first year. With ESPN adopting the event in 1980 and providing extensive coverage, interest has grown steadily, with attendance in 2007 topping 300,000.

Which schools have won the most CWS tiles over the years? One has ruled the most rings, but others have enjoyed June in Nebraska as well, including 2008 winner Fresno State, which won its first title with an unlikely run that ended in a memorable upset of Georgia.

Kiplinger’s 2008 Best Cities to Live, Work and Play

Kiplinger’s Personal Finance picks the top 10 cities in which to live and work in the July issue. The method for the rankings involved a lot of number crunching to find cities with strong economies, lots of jobs, reasonable living costs and an abundance of recreational, cultural, and overall fun things to do. Kevin Stolarick, research director at the Martin Prosperity Institute, a think tank that studies economic prosperity, compiled the figures and says: “Our formula highlights cities not just with strong past performance, but also with all the ingredients for future success.”
