f the 2009 preseason college football polls are to be believed, there’s not much point in playing the season. When the Associated Press anointed Florida as No. 1 at the start, it made for pretty much a clean sweep for the Gators.

The defending national champions received 58 of 60 first place votes. No. 2 Texas got the others.

Here’s how they’ll break from the gate:

The Texas-Oklahoma game has produced its share of heroes over the years, some of them more unlikely than others. Coming up big against a hated rival can create a reputation that lasts a lifetime.

Here’s a list of some of the top OU performances against Texas. Since beating the hated Longhorns is a rather large deal on the north side of the Red River, Sooner fans probably remember these names fondly.

ESPN Best College Teams Ever

Which are the best college football teams of all time? Comparing teams and eras can be dicey business, but ESPN’s Page 2 took a stab at it anyway.

If you’re a fan of the old Big 8, this is your kind of list.

Either way, here’s what they came up with:

1. Nebraska (1971): 13-0 and beat Oklahoma 35-31 on Thanksgiving Day in what many consider “The Game of the Century.”

2. USC (1972): First team to be named No. 1 on every ballot in both the coaches and media poll.

3. Nebraska (1995): Averaged more than 50 points a game, and blew out No. 2 Florida by 38 points in the Fiesta Bowl.

4. Army (1945): Glenn Davis, Doc Blanchard, a 9-0 season and a 48-0 win over Notre Dame.

5. Miami (2001): 12-0, winning by an average of 34 points.

6. Michigan (1947): Led by the “Mad Magicians,” the Wolverines finished 10-0 and beat USC, 49-0, in the Rose Bowl.

7. Notre Dame (1947): Won a disputed national title over Michigan with Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Lujack leading the way.

8. Oklahoma (1956): Finished 10-0 in the midst of the Sooners 47-game winning streak.

9. Oklahoma (1974): Won Barry Switzer’s first national title.

10. Alabama (1961): Claimed the first of Bear Bryant’s six national titles at the school.

Longest college football win streaks

Records are made to be broken, but the Oklahoma Sooners may not have much to worry about when it comes to at least one of their cherished football standards. Given the balance and competitiveness of major college football these days, the idea of a team winning 47 consecutive games — as OU did from 1953-57 — seems unlikely, to say the least.

The closest to approach that mark in the last 50 years was Toledo, which won 35 straight from 1969-71. Most recently, USC ran off 34 in a row from 2003 to 2005. Miami (Fla.) also won 34 consecutive from 2000 to 2002, but most of the other long streaks are relatively old news.

Here’s a list of the top runs of sustained excellence in major college history:

Sporting News Preseason Rankings

The Sporting News, one of America’s truly venerable sports publications, encourages readers to “See a different game.” After checking out the magazine’s Preseason Top 10 NCAA football teams, fans of some traditional powers may wonder what game TSN is watching.

No Texas? What about Michigan? What happened to Nick Saban and Alabama? Isn’t Kansas supposed to be good again?

Alas, none of the aforementioned made the cut.
