Dallas Cowboys 2009 schedule

Many love ‘em. Many hate ‘em. But few NFL fans are neutral on the subject of the Dallas Cowboys.

Sure, they haven’t won a playoff game since 1996, and at least part of the circus left town when Terrell Owens shuffled off to Buffalo, but Jerry Jones’ team is still the league’s top TV draw and greatest attention magnet. Moving into a brand new $1.2 billion stadium this season should only serve to enhance the brand. (Jones certainly hopes so, since he’s on the hook for the lion’s share of that tab.)

But what of the games, you ask? Yes, they’re part of the package as well. Here’s a look at Dallas’ 2009 schedule, a 17-week adventure sure to produce its share of ups and downs. (Home games are in all caps.)

NFL Draft order

It’s probably the most overrated, over-analyzed and over-discussed event on the year’s sporting calendar, but try telling that to the draftniks who agonize over the NFL’s annual distribution of the latest batch of college talent.

Before we get around to kicking the New York Jets for their latest draft day misadventure, here’s the order of selection for 2009’s first round, barring trades.

Teams with the most NFL Hall of Famers

If you are planning to win championships in the NFL, it doesn’t hurt to have a roster peppered with Future Hall of Famers. Small wonder, then, that the top 10 franchises in Hall of Fame players are also some of the most successful franchises in league history.

The Bears lead the way with 26 HOFers, with the Packers not far behind at 21.

Who else is well-represented in Canton?

NFL coaching changes

Coaching in the NFL is a great job. You make good money, everybody knows your name, and when things go well, you’re a local hero.

The downside? During the season, you often arrive at the office before the sun comes up, leave after dark, and spend most of your “free” time worrying about who is going to replace you and when.

And, if you’re really lucky, you get to spend your working hours dealing with the likes of Terrell Owens and Pacman Jones.

As the old saying goes, coaches are hired to be fired, and there was plenty of both going on around the league this season. Of the 32 teams, 10 have changed bosses, with former Super Bowl winners Mike Shanahan (Denver) and Jon Gruden (Tampa Bay) included among those invited to pack up their things and never return.

Super Bowl records of 2009 finalists

The four finalists in this year’s NFL conference championship games have accounted for a total of nine Super Bowl appearances, led by the Pittsburgh Steelers with six.

In all, the group has compiled a 6-3 record on Super Sunday, with the Steelers notching five of the victories.

Here’s the list:

Philadelphia: 0-2 (Lost XV, XXXIX)

While the Super Bowl has produced no shortage of memorable moments, it has minted its share of dubious achievements as well.

Here’s a short list of offbeat records that participants probably don’t care to remember:

The Pittsburgh Steelers hold the record for most Super Bowl victories, having now claimed the big prize six times. The San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys are one back at five SB victories.

But who has actually won the most National Football League championships? None of the above.

Here’s the list of teams with the most to brag about:

– Green Bay Packers (12): 1929-31, 1936, 1939, 1944, 1961-62, 1965-67, 1996.

– Chicago Bears (9): 1921, 1932-33, 1940-41, 1943, 1946, 1963, 1985.

– New York Giants (7): 1927, 1934, 1938, 1956, 1986, 1990, 2007.

Cowboys top NFL team valuations

The National Football League is American sports’ greatest cash cow. In no other game can owners routinely convince cities to pony hundreds of millions of dollars for revenue producing new stadiums…while also inducing fans to pay thousands for personal seat licences that offer the opportunity to buy pricey tickets.

Nice gig if you can get it, and most of the league’s 32 franchises have done just that.

When Forbes put together its most recent list of the league’s most valuable teams, those with new stadiums (or new ones coming online within the next year) crowded the top. In all, a whopping 19 franchises were valued at more than $1 billion, compared with five last year and none five years ago.

Leading the list: None other than America’s Team, the Dallas Cowboys, at $1.6 billion. With a new stadium opening for 2009, Forbes estimates that the club will bring in an additional $100 million each season.

Here are the Top 10, with current valuation:

Washington Redskins: $1.5 billion
New England Patriots: $1.3 billion
New York Giants: $1.2 billion
New York Jets: $1.2 billion
Houston Texans: $1.1 billion

While the 2007 Giants left smiles on millions of Metropolitan area football fans’ faces, the G-Men are hardly strangers to the championship stage. Unfortunately, much of that history is a good deal less satisfying than that upset of the mighty Patriots.

Overall, the Giants are 7-12 in games that decided the National Football League’s championship. That record includes a deflating five consecutive title game losses between 1958 and ‘63.
