Least health-conscious shoppers

Maybe they mean well. Maybe, before each trip to the grocery store, they make a silent vow to pass up the chocolate chip cookies and leave the rocky road ice cream in freezer case…only to crater when those goodies are right under their nose, ready to leap into the shopping cart.

The ever-vigilant list-makers at Forbes keep track of just about everything, and lately, they’ve been casting an eye toward that checkout line. Using data compiled by Catalina Marketing of St. Petersburg, Fla., they were able to identify the home bases of America’s unhealthiest grocery shoppers.

How did they do it? Catalina calculated the total amount spent on more than 100,000 individual product codes deemed generally unhealthy at 17,000 grocery stores. Those figures were then corrected for total expenditures.

Here are the 10 areas that fared worst, in reverse order, with percentage of total purchase devoted to unhealthy items:

10. Milwaukee-Waukesha-West Allis, Wisc.: 10.19

9. Memphis, Tenn.-Ark.-Miss.: 10.27

8. Nashville-Davidson-Murfreesboro, Tenn.: 10.32

7. New Orleans, La.: 10.32

6. Louisville-Jefferson County, Ky.-La.: 10.65

5. Charlotte-Gastonia-Concord, N.C.-S.C.: 10.9

4. Chicago-Naperville-Joliet, Ill.-Ind.-Wisc.: 10.95

3. Indianapolis-Carmel, Ind.: 11.33

2. Richmond, Va.: 11.45

1. Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington, Minn.-Wisc.: 11.47

Best Cities To Earn a Living

Since we can’t all be rich, finding a place where we can make a decent living without spending it all on necessities may be the next best thing.

Recently, Forbes set out to establish which U.S. cities are the best places to do just that. Factors included general business environment, low unemployment, and high wages.

Who made the list? Here’s a sampling from the Top 10, in reverse order:

Best Cities for Commuters

There’s nothing quite like sitting in gridlock to help get the workday off to a rousing start. Getting stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic later in the day as you rush to your son’s baseball game or your daughter’s swim meet is big fun, too.

More and more Americans are cutting out the time and expense of commuting in favor of working from home. If your job doesn’t allow for that kind of luxury, finding a good town to get around might be a priority.

Forbes recently tried to identify the best cities for commuters, weighing items such as public transportation, carpooling efficiency, bottlenecking and insufficient capacity, and more.

From their list of 10, here are the bottom seven:

8. Kansas City, Mo.

7. Hartford, Conn.

Hardest Drinking Cities

If you really enjoy bellying up to the bar and drinking your fill, the Mile High City is the place to be. According to a survey conducted by Men’sHealth, Denver, Colo., tops the list of America’s “10 most dangerously drunk cities.”

MensHealth used five measuring points to assess each locale, gathering information from the Centers for Disease Control, the FBI, and Mothers Against Drunk Drivers. Those factors included 1) deaths related to liver disease, 2) number of binge drinkers, 3) DUI arrest rates, 4) alcohol-related fatal wrecks, and 5) MADD reports.
