14th Annual Critics’ Choice Awards winners

The Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA) announced the winners of the 14th annual Critics’ Choice Awards at a star-studded ceremony at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium and which aired live on VH1.

Slumdog Millionaire was the big winner with five wins for Best Picture, Best Director for Danny Boyle, Best Writer for Simon Beaufoy, Best Young Actor/Actress for Dev Patel and Best Composer for A.R. Rahman. Sean Penn and Milk received two awards, Best Actor and Best Ensemble. Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married) and Meryl Streep (Doubt) tied in the lead actress category, marking only the second tie in a lead actor category.

Memorable movie nuns

Doubt, which opened Dec. 12, promises to guarantee Meryl Streep a record-breaking 15th Oscar nomination. She plays a fierce nun who suspects priest Philip Seymour Hoffman of harboring a non-ecclesiastical yen for an altar boy.

Sister Meryl is only one of many actresses who have donned the nun’s habit. Others range from the predictable (Deborah Kerr) to the outrageous (Joan Collins). Among them: Susan Sarandon won the 1995 Oscar for playing a modern real-life nun with progressive ideas in Dead Man Walking. She befriends convicted killer Sean Penn and remains at his side even when he walks the proverbial Last Mile. Terrific performance in a terrific film.

Jodie Foster was the fire-breathing nun who made The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys (2002) seem dangerous indeed. Despite Foster’s emphatic performance, the film received only a limited release.

Christopher Durang’s play Sister Mary Explains It All wasn’t even considered movie material but was made into a TV movie in 2001 with Diane Keaton as unsympathetic Sister Mary. Ironically, in 1987, Keaton had directed her first film, a documentary named Heaven, which explored various people’s views of the Sweet Hereafter.

What about Mrs. Robinson as a Mother Superior? Anne Bancroft, The Graduate’s suburban sexual aggressor, played a worldly Mother in 1985’s Agnes of God. She confesses that her former husband and their children never forgave her when she decided to enter a convent.

Vanessa Redgrave probably played the most ferocious nun of all in 1971’s The Devils. A hunchback, she had lust in her heart for priest Oliver Reed and engineers his downfall. When he’s (very graphically) burned at the stake, her joy is downright fiendish.

Actors who played gay roles

At this point, Sean Penn ranks high among probable Best Actor Oscar nominees. The dynamic Penn stars as assassinated gay politico Harvey Milk in Gus Van Sant’s Milk, which opened nationwide Nov. 26. There was a time, though, when such a role would have been considered risky. Among those who proved otherwise: Hugh Jackman. What’s this, People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive once played gay? Yes, and he was heaped with praise for it. Although Jackman’s buff performance in Australia, not to mention X-Man Wolverine, helped make him People’s cover boy, he won a Tony as gay entertainer Peter Allen in The Boy from Oz. That musical hasn’t made it to the screen yet, but if it does, you can be sure Jackman will be cast. Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal. Probably the movie world’s most famous onscreen gay couple, they moved critics and moviegoers in Brokeback Mountain(Watch) . But when Brokeback surprisingly lost the 2005 Best Picture Oscar to Crash, Academy homophobia was blamed. Maybe Oscar voters will anoint this year’s Penn as means of erasing that label. Russell Crowe. Six years before Gladiator, Crowe played a good-natured gay in 1994’s The Sum of Us. He and his widowed father bond while searching for appropriate Significant Others. However, Crowe was reportedly offended when he and his rock band 30 Odd Foot of Grunts played San Francisco and gays threw their underwear onstage. Meryl Streep. In 2002’s The Hours, Madame Meryl played a plain-spoken lesbian who vainly tries to keep AIDS-ridden friend Ed Harris from suicide. And near the beginning of her movie career, when handlers discourage such role choices, she played Woody Allen’s ex-wife in Manhattan. When she writes a book explaining how her same-sex relationship had been much more nurturing than her marriage, Woody’s character was not amused. Didn’t hurt Meryl’s career at all.
