Yankee Stadium closed its doors on Sunday, Sept. 21, as the team moves across the street to open a new park to start the 2009 season.

While the replacement venue also will be known as Yankee Stadium, it will not be The House That Ruth Built. Those images, however, will remain vivid in the memories of generations of fans.

What are some of the most memorable moments at the big ballpark in the Bronx?

Here’s a sampling from one list compiled by Sports Illustrated:

– Babe Ruth’s 60 home runs in 1927.

– Joe Louis knocks out Max Schmeling, 1938.

– Lou Gehrig’s farewell speech, 1939.

– Joe DiMaggio’s 56-game hitting streak in 1941.

– Don Larsen’s World Series perfect game, 1956.

– First overtime NFL championship game (1958).

– Chuck Bednarik lays out Frank Gifford (1960).

– Roger Maris’ 61 home runs in 1961.

– Reggie Jackson’s three home run game in the 1977 World Series.

– George Brett and the Pine Tar Incident, 1983.

MLB All-Time RBI Leaders

Baseball purists had mixed emotions when Barry Bonds passed Hank Aaron to become baseball’s all-time home run king. Aaron, after all, had compiled his numbers before steroids became all the rage, and Bonds and his churlish personality had few friends in or outside the game.

Quietly, Aaron has retained one of the baseball’s other high-regarded records, driving in more runs than any other man in big league history. Even if a team were to sign Bonds, he would need more than 300 RBI to catch Aaron — an unlikely prospect, to say the least.

As you might expect, a list of the Top 10 All-Time RBI leaders is going to include some familiar names, so here goes, with years played and total runs batted in:

1. Hank Aaron (1954-76) — 2,297

2. Babe Ruth (1914-35) — 2,213

3. Cap Anson (1871-97) — 2,076

4. Barry Bonds (1986-?) — 1,996

5. Lou Gehrig (1923-39) — 1,995

6. Stan Musial (1941-63) — 1,951

7. Ty Cobb (1905-28) — 1,938

8. Jimmie Foxx (1925-45) — 1,922

9. Eddie Murray (1977-97) — 1,917

10. Willie Mays (1951-73) — 1,903

Retired Yankee Numbers

When the New York Yankees move into their brand new stadium in 2009, they’ll be bringing no shortage of history and tradition with them. Love ‘em or hate ‘em, just about everyone has strong feelings about the Bronx Bombers, and leaving The House That Ruth Built will stir plenty of emotion in New York City and beyond.

Not surprisingly, a team with such a rich tradition of success has employed a legend or two along the way. In all, 16 players who actually wore the pinstripes have had their number retired, including Yogi Berra and Bill Dickey, who share No. 8.
