While it may seem as though anyone who is anyone in the music business probably has a closet full of Grammys, that’s not quite true. Some well-known performers have been left to face the world without the clutter of such bothersome hardware, consoling themselves with regular trips to the bank.

Here’s a list of some prominent entertainers and groups who have never managed to make the Grammy cut:

Best cover songs

The passing of Isaac Hayes started us thinking about cover songs, the tunes made popular, or not, by someone other than the original artists.

In 1969, Hayes, known more for the theme from Shaft, made what would become a classic R&B cover of Glenn Campbell’s country ballad, “By the Time I Get to Phoenix.” Hayes’ remake came in at a little over 18 minutes. Incidentally, Hayes also wrote “Soul Man,” the Sam and Dave hit that was covered by Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi as the Blues Brothers.

Unfortunately, Hayes’ cover of the Campbell hit didn’t make the DigitalDreamDoor.com top ten, but here are the tunes that did. The complete list is at Digitaldreamdoor.com, a music and movies site based in Boca Raton, Fla.

Let’s finally put this one to rest once and for all: Who are the top-selling recording artists of all time? The Recording Industry Association of America, the same group that actually owns the copyright to the Gold, Platinum, Multi-Platinum and Diamond designations for record sales, compiled this definitive list, based on certified units sold.

Is the No. 1 artist any surprise? No. 2 might be, country’s favorite son Garth Brooks (right). But look at where the Stones landed! And why do we find it immensely satisfying to see George Strait finishing way ahead of Madonna? But AC/DC?!?! Who knew?!

Here is the top 20 and the number of certified units sold:
