Those on-screen romances have been known to carry over

Brangelina will always be with us. Even if Brad and Angie don’t stay together, they’ll remain a point of reference for the media. Owen Wilson and Kate Hudson, an on-again, off-again duo, are now on again. Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon are still on. Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez didn’t last, but Ben found solace with Jennifer Garner.

There’s something provocative about movie stars falling in love while making a movie. What follows is a list of cuddly movie co-stars, some contemporary, some from days of yore.

You may wonder why Liam Neeson and Natasha Richardson or Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward or Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh didn’t make the list. It’s because Cupid struck them during the production of a stageplay, not a movie. After all, we aim for total accuracy.

And now, the list, beginning with some golden oldies:

The year produced more than its share of weird events

The stock market tumbled. A black man was elected President of the United States. The Tampa Bay Rays made it to the World Series. Financial institutions crumbled, and once-proud automobile manufacturers went to Washington, seeking bailout money to survive.

Some genuinely unusual things happened in 2008, too.

As always, People magazine was keeping track of such offbeat events. Here’s the publication’s list of the most shocking moments of the year just completed:

1. Man gives birth

2. Britney held in psych ward

3. Heath found dead

4. Governor’s call girl scandal

5. Patrick (Swayze) cancer diagnosis

6. Mariah secretly weds

7. Jennifer (Hudson) family murder

8. Travis and DJ AM survive crash

9. Golden Globes canceled

10. Eddie and Tracey suddenly split

11. Clay: I’m a gay dad

Personally, our most shocking moment in 2008 was opening our 401k statement in November. But, we digress…

To read more about all these choices, and to see a slideshow, visit People.

Sean Penn's portrayal of politician Harvey Milk has generated Oscar buzz

At this point, Sean Penn ranks high among probable Best Actor Oscar nominees. The dynamic Penn stars as assassinated gay politico Harvey Milk in Gus Van Sant’s Milk, which opened nationwide Nov. 26. There was a time, though, when such a role would have been considered risky. Among those who proved otherwise: Hugh Jackman. What’s this, People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive once played gay? Yes, and he was heaped with praise for it. Although Jackman’s buff performance in Australia, not to mention X-Man Wolverine, helped make him People’s cover boy, he won a Tony as gay entertainer Peter Allen in The Boy from Oz. That musical hasn’t made it to the screen yet, but if it does, you can be sure Jackman will be cast. Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal. Probably the movie world’s most famous onscreen gay couple, they moved critics and moviegoers in Brokeback Mountain(Watch) . But when Brokeback surprisingly lost the 2005 Best Picture Oscar to Crash, Academy homophobia was blamed. Maybe Oscar voters will anoint this year’s Penn as means of erasing that label. Russell Crowe. Six years before Gladiator, Crowe played a good-natured gay in 1994’s The Sum of Us. He and his widowed father bond while searching for appropriate Significant Others. However, Crowe was reportedly offended when he and his rock band 30 Odd Foot of Grunts played San Francisco and gays threw their underwear onstage. Meryl Streep. In 2002’s The Hours, Madame Meryl played a plain-spoken lesbian who vainly tries to keep AIDS-ridden friend Ed Harris from suicide. And near the beginning of her movie career, when handlers discourage such role choices, she played Woody Allen’s ex-wife in Manhattan. When she writes a book explaining how her same-sex relationship had been much more nurturing than her marriage, Woody’s character was not amused. Didn’t hurt Meryl’s career at all.

Usually, how a film opens will give you a pretty good idea of how well it eventually will do. After that first weekend, word of mouth goes a long way toward determining continued success, and negative comments can drive a film to the second-run houses before you can say “Love Guru.”

The Dark Knight had no such issues. In its first weekend of release, Batman’s latest joust with Joker earned $155.34 million, making it the biggest opening ever.

Who else has produced some of the biggest summer debuts of all time? Here’s a list of the other movies movies that brought in $100 million or more in that all-important debut weekend:

1. Spider-Man 3 (2007): $151,116,516

2. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006): $135,634,554

3. Shrek the Third (2007): $121,629,270
