While plenty of folks lost interest in the league (if, indeed, they ever had any!), your hardcore biscuit-head still makes it out to the arena, usually paying dearly for the privilege.

That work stoppage, as you may recall, worked out pretty well for the owners. They ended up with most of the concessions, including reduced payrolls, a tighter salary cap, and relatively fixed costs.

The players? Most of them simply got a year older.

So who’s the richest of the rich in the “new” NHL?

For the second straight year, the Toronto Maple Leafs enjoy that distinction. One of the league’s Original Six, the Leafs carry a value estimated at $448 million — chump change for an NFL franchise, but pretty good money where we come from.

Here’s the rest of the Top 10, according to Forbes:

 2. New York Rangers –$411 million

 3. Montreal Canadiens — $334 million

 4. Detroit Red Wings — $303 million

 5. Philadelphia Flyers — $275 million

 6. Dallas Stars — $273 million

 7. Boston Bruins — $263 million

 8. Vancouver Canucks — $236 million

 9. Colorado Avalanche — $231 million

Chicago's misery continues, but other cities know that empty feeling

With a promising season ending in all-too-familiar defeat, the Chicago Cubs spend another winter pondering the might-have-beens. Swept out of the National League Division Series by the lightly-regarded Los Angeles Dodgers, the Cubs will go yet another year without claiming their first World Series title since 1908.

The denizens of Wrigleyville, however, are hardly alone in their misery. Plenty of other sports franchises and their faithful fans have endured impressive runs of futility.

Forbes set out to identify the big losers — lovable and otherwise — of the jock kingdom. Here’s part of what they came up with:

– Los Angeles Clippers: 12 consecutive losing seasons (1993-2005)
