If you wanted a spot among the National League’s top home run hitters in 2008, it didn’t hurt if you were named Ryan, as three of the top six were.

No one, however, was able to keep pace with Philadelphia’s Ryan Howard. The Phillies’ first baseman knocked it out of the park 11 times in September alone, leading his team to the NL East championship in the process.

Here’s the list of the leaders:

NL Batting Average Leaders 2008

Chipper Jones of the Atlanta Braves won the 2008 National League batting title, finishing the season with a career-best .364 average. It was the highest average for an NL batting champion since Barry Bonds hit .370 in 2002.

In doing so, Jones fell just shy of Mickey Mantle’s season record for a switch hitter. Mantle batted .365 in 1957.

Batting

National League RBI Leaders 2008

In the process of pumping out a National League-best 48 home runs in 2008, Philadelphia’s Ryan Howard drove in a few, too. His 146 runs batted in beat out second place David Wright of the Mets by 22 RBI.

A quick footnote: Of the top seven, Howard is the only player who was able to help his team into the playoffs, as the Phillies won the National League East.

That said, here’s a list of the NL’s top run producers in 2008:

3. Adrian Gonzalez, San Diego: 119

4. Albert Pujols, St. Louis: 116

National League Hits Leaders 2008

Jose Reyes long has been touted as one of the most exciting players in baseball, and at least some of the numbers back that up.

In 2008, the Mets shortstop led the National League in triples (19) and was second in stolen bases (56). He also was the only NL player to top 200 hits, finishing with 204.

Still, there was no ignoring a late season slide dropped his batting average under .300 (.297) as New York faded and was eliminated from playoff contention on the season’s final day.

Can Reyes and the Mets get it together in 2009? Having the No. 1 and 2 hit men in the league might be a good place to start.
