With the Summer Olympics in Beijing just around the corner, the race to field the strongest, fastest, and most athletic teams in the world is coming to a close. Years of training will be put to the test, with dreams realized and broken over a little more than two-week run in China.
To whet your appetite for another five-ring circus, we looked up the gold medal count from the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. Here’s the list, which features several old favorites, and perhaps a few surprises cracking the Top 10:
1. United States – 36 gold, 39 silver, 27 bronze (102)
2. People’s Republic of China — 32 gold, 17 silver, 14 bronze (63)
3. Russian Federation — 27 gold, 27 silver, 38 bronze (92)
