Offbeat NFL Records
September 8, 2008
Anyone can look up your leading rushers or top passers, but the art of a good list is delving into the truly obscure.
Not everyone has the time to do that, of course, but the folks at Guinness World Records make a living at it. That’s why they are willing to go the extra yard. (Pun not intended.)
Here are some off-the-beaten-path records included in their 2008 edition:
– First Player to Return Two Interceptions More Than 100 Yards: Philadelphia’s Lito Shepard. Even more remarkable was that both came against the same team, the Dallas Cowboys. Shepard went 101 yards on Nov. 15, 2004, then brought one back 102 yards on Oct. 8, 2006.
– Most Combined Net Yards in a Career: Jerry Rice rolled up 23,546 for the 49ers, Raiders and Seahawks from 1985 through 2004.
– First player with 20 Interceptions and 20 Sacks in a Career: Ronde Barber of Tampa Bay went over the top in 2005.
– Most Fumbles in a Career: Warren Moon was relieved of the pigskin a whopping 161 times in stops at Houston, Minnesota, Seattle and Kansas City.
– Largest Comeback in a Championship Game: The Indianapolis Colts trailed the New England Patriots, 21-3, before rallying for a 38-34 victory in the 2007 AFC Championship Game.
