NFL coaching changes
January 19, 2009
Coaching in the NFL is a great job. You make good money, everybody knows your name, and when things go well, you’re a local hero.
The downside? During the season, you often arrive at the office before the sun comes up, leave after dark, and spend most of your “free” time worrying about who is going to replace you and when.
And, if you’re really lucky, you get to spend your working hours dealing with the likes of Terrell Owens and Pacman Jones.
As the old saying goes, coaches are hired to be fired, and there was plenty of both going on around the league this season. Of the 32 teams, 10 have changed bosses, with former Super Bowl winners Mike Shanahan (Denver) and Jon Gruden (Tampa Bay) included among those invited to pack up their things and never return.
Here’s a list of coaching changes made either during or after the end of 2008:
| Team | Coach | Replacement |
|---|---|---|
| Cleveland | Romeo Crennel | Eric Mangini |
| Denver | Mike Shanahan | Josh McDaniels |
| Detroit | Rod Marinelli | Jim Schwartz |
| Indianapolis | Tony Dungy | Jim Caldwell |
| New York Jets | Eric Mangini | Rex Ryan |
| Oakland | Lane Kiffin | Tom Cable* |
| St. Louis | Scott Linehan | Steve Spagnuolo |
| San Francisco | Mike Nolan | Mike Singletary |
| Seattle | Mike Holmgren | Jim Mora |
| Tampa Bay | Jon Gruden | Raheem Morris |
