Most NBA titles by team
June 15, 2009
In the 62-year history of the National Basketball Association, more than half the league’s champions have been produced by two teams — the Boston Celtics and the Minneapolis/Los Angeles Lakers.
With another title, the Lakers now have 16 overall and are just behind the Celtics, who are still the all-time best with 17 NBA crowns.
Only 16 teams have actually claimed the league’s most coveted trophy. Only 10 have won more than once.
In other words, it’s a pretty exclusive club, and here are the members:
- 17 — Boston Celtics (1957, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1968, 1969, 1974, 1976, 1981, 1984, 1986, 2008)
- 16 — Minneapolis/Los Angeles Lakers (1949, 1950, 1952, 1953, 1954, 1972, 1980, 1982, 1985, 1987, 1988, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2009, 2010)
- 6 — Chicago Bulls (1991, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997, 1998)
- 4 — San Antonio Spurs (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007)
