Most British Open Wins
July 16, 2008
When they call the roll of British Open Champions, Harry Vardon’s name continues to come up first. Between 1896 and 1914, Vardon took home the Claret Jug a record six times, one more than anyone else in the event’s history.
With Tiger Woods’ assault on the major championship record books on hold after season-ending knee surgery, Vardon and his colleagues can rest easy. Tiger has won three British Opens, but it will be at least 2009 before he can add to that total.
Who else has ruled the British?
Here’s the list of players who have won the event five times or more:
6 – Harry Vardon: 1896, ‘98, ‘99, 1903, ‘11, ‘14
5 – James Braid: 1901, ‘05, ‘06, ‘08, ‘10
5 – J.H. Taylor: 1894, ‘95, 1900, ‘09, ‘13
5 — Peter Thomson: 1954, ‘55, ‘56, ‘58, ‘65
5 — Tom Watson: 1975, ‘77, ‘80, ‘82, ‘83
