Can a big company make megabucks and still be a responsible member of the community? Can profits live comfortably with social and environmental issues?

The editors at Fortune wanted to find out who, if anyone, might be able to answer those questions in the affirmative. Working with AccountAbility, Csrnetwork and Asset4, they determined to rank the world’s 100 largest corporations by the quality of their commitment to social and environmental goals.

Who made the prestigious cut?

Here’s the list of most accountable companies:

2. G.E.

3. HSBC Holdings

4. France Telecom

5. HBOS

6. Nokia

7. Electricite de France

8. Suez

9. BP

10. Royal Dutch Shell
