Layoff-free companies

Bill Sullivan

Seems like nary a day goes by without some major business announcing that it is parting ways with thousands of employees. Layoffs and downsizings have become so much a part of the daily news that the numbers barely shock anymore.

Of course, not every company is improving its bottom line by trimming expenses rather than expanding business. At least a few waded into January’s general malaise with the enviable history of never having to resort to letting employees go in calculated numbers.

Fortune has its own list of “No layoffs — ever!”

Here goes:

Nugget Markets

Devon Energy

Aflac

QuikTrip

Container Store

NuStar Energy

Stew Leonard’s

Scottrade

Publix Super Markets
