At the end of a campaign season that seemed to stir unusual passion in the voting public, we got to thinking about some other images that are part of the fabric of the American consciousness.

Here’s a short list of iconic U.S. structures, creations most citizens will recognize without hesitation:

Empire State Building: Possibly the single-most famous building in the world. Home to business, movies, and the occasional visit from King Kong.

Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island: The symbol of freedom first seen by generations of immigrants.

Lincoln Memorial: One of the most stirring sights in Our Nation’s Capital, particularly at night.

Washington Monument: Shaped like an Egyptian obelisk, it stands 555’ 5 1/8” tall, and offers views in excess of 30 miles.

White House: Home to the U.S. President and one of the most recognizable U.S. symbols around the world.

Gateway Arch: Completed in 1965, the St. Louis structure honors Thomas Jefferson and the U.S. expansion West.

Golden Gate Bridge: Suspension bridge connecting San Francisco with Marin County is one of the world’s more recognized images.
