Hollywood has produced its share of memorable directors, perhaps none more fabled than the late Edward D. Wood, Jr.
Wood experienced a spectacularly unsuccessful career. Combine a woeful lack of talent with an understandable lack of financial support, and what do you get? Arguably the worst film maker of all time. His foibles and misadventures in low-budget cinema were artfully captured in Tim Burton’s 1994 film, Ed Wood, starring Johnny Depp in the title role.
Wood’s signature film: The 1959 opus, Plan 9 from Outer Space, a disjointed effort made all the more challenging when star (Bela Lugosi) died just after the start of production. Instead of writing the Lugosi character out of the script, Wood instead chose to have a much taller actor sub for Lugosi — holding a cape over his face throughout.
Of course, no one noticed.
