Celebrity baby names

When daughter Suri first saw the light of day, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes covered all bases, issuing a statement that Suri is Hebrew for “princess” and Persian for “red rose.” Several Hebrew linguists said they’d never heard of the word.

Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban like to present themselves as a just-plain-folks Nashville couple. But Tennesseans know the days of the week. So eyebrows were raised when they named their daughter Sunday even though she was born on a Monday. But the doting parents wanted to honor Sunday Reed, a liberated Australian woman who was a patroness of the arts and a muse to several celebrated artists.

Some celebs favor geographical names. So we have Ireland, daughter of bombastic Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger, and Dakota, offspring of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson.

Nicolas Cage loves comic books. Although a member of the Coppola clan, he chose his stage name from comics hero Luke Cage. And, oh yes, he named his son Kal-El, Superman’s real name during his early years on the planet Krypton. Probably, he’ll go by “Kal.”

Jason Lee is a likable character actor, often cast in genial best-friends parts. But will his son feel friendly after years of being kidded about his name of Pilot Inspektor?

If anyone’s to blame, it’s Frank Zappa. His urchins go by the names of Moon Unit Zappa, Diva Muffin Zappa, Dweezil Zappa and Ahmet Emuukha Rodan Zappa. At least there’s not a Godzilla Zappa in the bunch.
