“Youth is wasted on the young,” or so said Irish playwright and Nobel laureate George Bernard Shaw.

However, when Barack Obama landed in the White House, the relatively youthful 47-year-old Democrat (born August 4, 1961) became the nation’s fifth youngest president, beating Grover Cleveland by 66 days.

Here are the Top Ten youngest presidents, by age upon taking office, courtesy of Infoplease.

Note: Roosevelt was sworn in after the assassination of William McKinley in 1901, making Kennedy the youngest president actually voted to the office. At 69, Ronald Reagan was the oldest president to take office.

Best cover songs

The passing of Isaac Hayes started us thinking about cover songs, the tunes made popular, or not, by someone other than the original artists.

In 1969, Hayes, known more for the theme from Shaft, made what would become a classic R&B cover of Glenn Campbell’s country ballad, “By the Time I Get to Phoenix.” Hayes’ remake came in at a little over 18 minutes. Incidentally, Hayes also wrote “Soul Man,” the Sam and Dave hit that was covered by Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi as the Blues Brothers.

Unfortunately, Hayes’ cover of the Campbell hit didn’t make the DigitalDreamDoor.com top ten, but here are the tunes that did. The complete list is at Digitaldreamdoor.com, a music and movies site based in Boca Raton, Fla.

Top NFL players from black colleges

They used to call themselves “SBCs,” as in “small Black colleges,” because that’s how TV announcers used to describe the football players from relatively obscure historically Black colleges: “And there’s Walter Payton from Jackson State, a small Black college in Mississippi.”

Well, the mostly Southern schools may have been small in stature, but they stood pretty tall when it came to sending players to pro football. Black college players helped stock and get off the ground the American Football League in the 1960s when rosters of the stodgy, old National Football League teams generally didn’t have a lot of Black players.

Here’s a list of the top Black college players who made it big in the NFL. The list was compiled by Michael Hurd, sportswriter and Black college football historian.
