Some things never go out of style. The years may come and go, and trends will call for skinny pants one year, wide-legged ones the next. This chilly weather gives you an excuse to buy a new coat. Even if you really don’t need one, it’s hard to resist the urge. Coats this fall are all shapes and styles, bright colors (or black, of course) with cinched waists (or swing style), hip length or longer. Here are a few that Shopperati’s experts think are fabulous. We’re always keeping an eye out for stylish bargains and great sales. This week we’ve found a handful of handbags, all for less than $50:

1. Kohl’s has a faux snakeskin hobo bag by Relic that’s a bit shiny, with black patent trim, on sale for $33.60 (it was $48).

2. Botkier is that very pricy, hip designer line that has a Target line of bags that look a lot more expensive than they are. The roomy gray faux python satchel even has a cell phone pocket, for $28 (it was $40, pictured left).

3. If you want a splashy colorful statement bag, look no further than Betsey Johnson’s Betseyville canvas tote, complete with pink spotted straps, a wild girly graphic and her signature metal tag. It’s $43.50 at Macys (pictured, right), originally $58.

4. Piperlime is a great site for bags and shoes, and they also have great sales. This Jessica Simpson Pacha tote was $99, and now it’s $50!

5. Another great site for accessories (and clothes, jewelry, etc.) is Amazon. They’ve got a lot more than books! We spotted a sporty RuthMichael blue Bali slouch purse for exactly $50.

#1: Heidi Klum: Kind of not fair, since she donned – what – six, seven outfits? But the gunmetal gray asymmetrical Armani Prive number on the red carpet and the incredible one-shouldered multi-hued gown on the stage. Gorgeous. 

#2-#3, a tie – Mariska Hargitay and Teri Hatcher: We couldn’t decide between two bright yellow gowns on two top actresses. Desperate Housewives’ Hatcher wore a Monique Lhuillier strapless gown with ruffles. Law & Order SVU star Hargitay wore a one-shouldered Carolina Herrera.

#4: Kate Walsh: The Private Practice star was ultra-glam in a waist-chinched gown with alternating ribbons of black satin and crystals. A black satin bow at the bodice was a nice touch.

#5: Christina Applegate: She shimmered in an asymmetrical ice blue-hued metallic gown with a bowed train by Reem Acra. Kudos to Applegate for being fabulous after a recent bout with breast cancer.

#6: Sandra Oh: The Grey’s Anatomy star wore a lovely Oscar de la Renta gown – a black lacy overlay, satin ribbon-tied waist, 5.5 carat (each) emerald-cut diamonds by Bulgari.

#7, #8 and #9: The other Desperate Housewives steal the show. Nicolette Sheridan was stunning in Angel Sanchez’ strapless purple gown, Felicity Huffman sparkled in a Reem Acra body-hugging gown and Marcia Cross looked precious in a ballerina length, full-skirted dress with jeweled embroidery.

#10: A shout-out to Brooke Shields in her Badgley Mischka strapless pink gown with a ruffled flowing train.

Honorable mentions to Jean Smart, Kyra Sedgwick and Jennifer Love Hewitt for graceful classic glamour.

New boots are a heralding of autumn, a shout-out that you’re moving into the other side of your closet to make the seasonal switch. 5. Maison Martin Margiela razor-cut textured boot: You want to stand out? Be an individual? Not stick with the same black suede plain high-heel knee-high crowd? Go for broke in Martin Margiela’s razor-cut and textured boots in bright green. They’re $995.

5. Van Cleef & Arpels Feerie perfume at Neiman Marcus comes in a beautiful bottle befitting the jewelry retailer, and a price of $150 for 3.3 oz.

6. David Yurman Eau de Parfum, also a Neiman Marcus special, is from yet another jewelry maker turned perfume designer. Again, the beautiful faceted golden bottle with a sculpted cap will make your bathroom look luxurious. A 2.5 bottle is $165.

7. Lalique le Parfum Extract comes from yet another unlikely perfume source. Lalique, known for their exquisite crystal, steps in with a new scent. We’re sure it smells heavenly, but this one may be as much about the bottle as the perfume. Pull out all the stops at Saks and scoop up one of these limited edition red crystal bottles (numbered and signed collector’s editions) for $935.

Seven interesting facts about the disaster:

1. How many people died? No one is certain. Some say up to 12,000, and others claim 10,000. But a detailed official study by the government’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration estimates 8,000 people perished on the island that day (although they qualify that with a footnote saying the death toll could be as high as 12,000). There were 37,000 residents of the city then.

2. The storm (hurricanes were not given names then) struck at night and the booming seaport city’s residents were dismissive of earlier weather reports that a strong storm had passed over Cuba. U.S. Weather Bureau forecasters said it would head northeast.

3. Researchers believe that the Galveston storm was a category 4 with with speeds of up to 140 mph and a storm surge of more than 15 feet.

4. More than 3,600 buildings were destroyed, including an orphanage where 10 nuns and 90 children died.

5. The estimated cost of damage from the storm was $20 million at that time. Today, it would add up to $700 million.

6. Galveston was a wealthy city in 1900, the only deep-water port in Texas when the cotton trade was booming. The main street was known as “Wall Street of the Southwest” and there were many mansions. The hurricane wiped out 12 blocks – about three-quarters of the city.

7. Isaac’s Storm, the recent best-selling book by Erik Larson, has post-storm video and photos on its Web site. Isaac Cline was Galveston’s meteorologist who, realizing his failure to recognize the storm’s fury, drove his buggy up and down the beach yelling to residents to flee. YouTube has a video clip made by Thomas Edison of the wreckage after the storm.

If you do not have time to reinforce any of those areas with prebuilt plywood and anchoring, there are some things you can do in the face of high winds. Information below and more available from the Red Cross, Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the Bluesky Foundation. Here are 10 tips for what to do in the face of strong winds:

1. Find out where the nearest Red Cross shelter is and be prepared to go there before the storm hits.

2. Have enough cash if you leave the area for several weeks. Have a predetermined destination in mind. Select a common meeting place or single point of contact for all family members. Charge cell phones fully.

3. Move anything near your house that could be tossed by high winds — tree branches, lawn furniture, barbecues, birdbaths, potted plants, bicycles, toys, trash cans, hanging plants – and put them in your garage or basement, or far away from your house. Tie down other loose items that could become projectiles. If limbs are broken or damaged, remove and move them, or remove branches so wind can blow through the tree. Taping windows provides no protection from breaking glass.

4. Identify a shelter room in your home: on the first floor, central part of the house, no windows. Stay away from windows and doors. Bathrooms have the bonus of a water supply, toilet and tub.

5. Collect jewelry, valuables and essential personal documents, inventory them and put them in as safe a place as possible — a waterproof container stored in an interior closet. If there is time, take photographs. Important documents include legal papers, financial documents, personal items such as birth certificates and marriage licenses, and especially insurance information.

6. Fill your car with gas. Back your car up against the inside of your garage door to keep the door from twisting due to high winds.

7. Move furniture and household fixtures away from exterior doors and window. Cover them with plastic if you can. Unplug appliances, computers and put whatever of those you can into cabinets or interior closets.

8. Have one gallon of water (minimum) per day, per person, for at least a week. Two quarts are for drinking and 2 are for food preparation or sanitation. Fill empty containers and a bathtub with water as an additional emergency supply. Have rain gear and sturdy shoes/boots. Have a one-week supply of non-perishable food (a non-electric can opener, cooking tools, a camping stove, paper plates, plastic utensils. Don’t forget pillows and blankets and a few changes of clothes. Don’t forget dog or cat food.

9. First aid kit should have all necessary prescription medications to last at least a week, also painkillers (aspirin, Tylonel, Advil), bandages, gauze pads, antiseptic, latex gloves, first aid cream, scissors, tweezers and a thermometer. Also, bleach and antibacterial soap, toilet paper/personal hygiene items, plastics bags, matches. Grab a tarp if you have one.

10. Get a battery operated radio or a crank radio, and plenty of flashlights or camping lights (plus extra batteries). Find where the NOAA Weather Radio station is on the radio. Grab a wrench to turn off gas and water. Do not use candles. If you have a gas-powered back-up generator, test it. Use it minimally, as power can be off for weeks.
