African-American senators
February 15, 2009
When Roland Burris finally was allowed to assume Barack Obama’s Senate seat, the 71-year-old former Illinois Attorney General became only the sixth African-American to serve in that body.
Here’s the list:
– Hiram Revels, Mississippi (Feb. 25, 1870, to March 4, 1871)
– Blanche K. Bruce, Mississippi (1875-1881)
– Edward Brooke, Massachusetts (1966–1979)
– Carol Mosely Braun, Illinois (1992-98)
– Barack Obama, Illinois (2005-2009)
– Roland Burris, Illinois (2009-)
