According to the 2008 version of the Fortune 500there’s money in all those falling prices at your nearby Wal-Mart. According to the most recent listing of America’s largest corporations, the Arkansas-based retailer leads the pack.

Wal-Mart confronted a challenging 2007 holiday season with a daring approach: Reducing prices by up to 20 percent on desirable items that were staying on the shelves as a result of a stagnating economy. Result: The company grossed more than $100 million, beating Target in same-season holiday sales for the first time in almost a decade.

Not surprisingly, three oil companies crack the Top 10, where they are joined by two automobile manufacturers and two financial institutions.

Here’s the list, with 2007 gross revenues in millions:

1. Wal-Mart Stores: $378,799

2. Exxon Mobil: $372,824

3. Chevron: $210,783

4. General Motors: $182,347

5. ConocoPhillips: $178,558

6. General Electric: $176,656

7. Ford Motor: $172,468

8. Citigroup: $159,229
