Fortune 500 Largest American Corporations
June 16, 2008
According to the 2008 version of the Fortune 500, there’s money in all those falling prices at your nearby Wal-Mart. According to the most recent listing of America’s largest corporations, the Arkansas-based retailer leads the pack.
Wal-Mart confronted a challenging 2007 holiday season with a daring approach: Reducing prices by up to 20 percent on desirable items that were staying on the shelves as a result of a stagnating economy. Result: The company grossed more than $100 million, beating Target in same-season holiday sales for the first time in almost a decade.
Not surprisingly, three oil companies crack the Top 10, where they are joined by two automobile manufacturers and two financial institutions.
Here’s the list, with 2007 gross revenues in millions:
1. Wal-Mart Stores: $378,799
