If you’re in New York City or Los Angeles, you might think America is getting pretty crowded. Try telling that to folks in less populous states, where there’s plenty of room to roam.

Which are the smallest U.S. states in terms of population? Here’s a list of the tiny 10:

1. Wyoming — 532,668
2. Vermont — 621,270
3. North Dakota – 641,481
4. Alaska – 686,293
5. South Dakota — 804,194
6. Delaware – 873,092
7. Montana –967,440
8. Rhode Island –1,050,788
9. Hawaii — 1,288,198
10. New Hampshire — 1,315,809

When April 15 nears, most Americans gather up paperwork, sharpen pencils, and sit down for a joust with those Internal Revenue Service forms we all know and love.

In most states, however, settling up with the IRS is just part of the fun. State taxes are a big part of the package, too, and some take a bigger bite than others.

Forbes has put together a list of states where Americans are taxed most. If you live in one of these, you probably won’t be surprised.

Here’s the top 10, with average tax burden per person:

10. Pennsylvania: $2,223
9. Wyoming: $2,357
8. Washington: $2,553
7. Massachusetts: $2,953
6. New York: $3,019
5. New Jersey: $3,024
4. Minnesota: $3,024
3. Connecticut: $3,596
2. Hawaii: $3,856
1. Vermont: $3,861

Best states to live

With the economy struggling and unemployment up, America looks at a dreary 2009 and prospects that things might get worse before they get better.

That doesn’t mean that life isn’t looking fairly rosy in parts of the U.S. Earlier this month, Gallup and disease management company Healthways issued a report ranking the best states in which to live. The ever-vigilant folks at Forbes took the information and converted it into a user-friendly slideshow.

Here are the Top 10, in reverse order:
