Mission Impossible (1996)
The first film version of the long-running series made a strong impression. Fast-paced and packed with action, MI effectively showcased Tom Cruise under the deft direction of Brian De Palma. The plot is either brilliantly crafted or hopelessly convoluted, but De Palma keeps things moving, and the scene in which Cruise is lowered from a series on wires to hack a computer is the film’s signature moment. Having more money to wreck cars and blow things up didn’t hurt, either.
