Wild, Wild West (1999)
Hard to imagine Will Smith leaving you longing for Robert Conrad, but this lifeless remake of the clever ’60s series was a major disappointment. In a rare career misstep, Smith recreates the role of James West, with more humor but none of the machismo and presence Conrad brought to the original version. Kevin Kline doesn’t fare much better as sidekick Artemis Gordon, and Kenneth Branagh sounds very much like a Brit attempting a Southern accent as bad guy Dr. Loveless. Not a good outing for anyone, particularly director Barry Sonnenfeld, who missed badly on this one.
