The Untouchables (1987)

Combine Robert De iNiro and Sean Connery, sprinkle in a little Kevin Costner and Andy Garcia, and you end up with a worthy update of the well-loved TV version. Costner is the wet-between-the-ears federal agent Eliot Ness, and De Niro is his nemesis as Al Capone. Ness is aided by veteran Chicago cop Connery (who won an Oscar for his work here), a rookie (Garcia) and an accountant (Charles Martin Smith) who knows a little about Capone’s tax problems. The plot isn’t all that great, but Brian De Palma captures the mood of the era and keeps things moving. A bit slick, perhaps, but fun nonetheless.
