Most Expensive Stadiums
August 21, 2008
The cost of keeping up in the sports world rises by the day. Each new stadium or arena has something bigger, better, grander and — yes — more expensive than the last.
The next major entry takes shape in Arlington, Texas, where the new Cowboys stadium is being built for an estimated $1.1 billion. With the 2011 Super Bowl and more already en route, Jerry Jones may be building the biggest cash cow in the country, even at this seemingly outrageous price.
Barring some major overruns, however, Jerry World won’t even be the most costly venue on the planet. So, which currently are the most pricey sports facilities around?
Forbes attempted to find out, putting together its list of the World’s Most Expensive Stadiums. Here are the last five, with the cost of construction, year of opening, and primary tenant:
10. ANZ Stadium, Sydney Australia, $624 million (2000): Central venue for the 2000 Summer Olympics.
9. Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis, Ind., $675 million (2008). New home of the NFL’s Colts.
8. Safeco Field, Seattle, Wash., $656 million (1999): Home of baseball’s Mariners.
7. Soldier Field, Chicago, Ill., $714 million (1923, renovated 2003): Home of the NFL’s Bears.
6. The Emirates, London, England, $770 million (2006): Home to Arsenal Football Club.
