Biggest NCAA first-round upsets
March 16, 2009
No. 15 Richmond 73, No. 2 Syracuse 69 (1991): Dick Tarrant and his Spiders had a reputation for being a tough out, and this was probably their finest hour. Richmond never trailed, becoming the first No. 15 seed to bounce a No. 2.
No. 15 Santa Clara 64, No. 2 Arizona 61 (1993): Freshman point guard Steve Nash converted big free throws down the stretch as the Broncos became only the second No. 15 to oust a No. 2.
No. 15 Hampton 58, No. 2 Iowa State 57 (2001): Hampton erased an 11-point second-half deficit and went ahead with just under seven seconds left. Iowa State missed a layup at the other end to seal the Cyclones’ place in NCAA infamy.
